In limit holdem you must play top quality hands, especially in low limit texas holdem. It's just too difficult to try to bluff someone out of 5 bucks. When you are first starting out I recommend that you play only the following hands:
Texas holdem is a game of multiple strategies. I have developed a list of do's and don'ts. Please keep in mind that these are a very general list. In texas hold'em there are many other factors such as: reading people (your gut instincts), what the other players have done in the past, your position to the dealer button, etc.
Anyway, on with the list!
There are many online tournaments going on all the time. They start at $5 at most casinos per tournament. When playing in a Texas Holdem tournament, there is some very good strategies to abide by. First, start off by playing ultra conservative. Play only the top ten hands. Raise a minimum of 2X the big blind when you have any of these hands. Make raises when the flop comes even if you don't hit your hand (1/2 the size of the pot) to see where you are (to see if you opponents will fold, call, or raise). If you hit your hand and there is three or more players raise it up 1X the pot size or more. This will drive out some of the other players.
After the first 1/2 hour (in an online tournament 10 person), you must change your playing style. Start to play suited connectors (7-8 of spades) and Ace-Any card, bet more aggressive, try not to go "all in" unless you are certain you will win. Bluff every other round, but don't let it cost you too much money.
When the tournament has 3 players left (you and two other players): if the other two other players show any weakness, bet into them (a check, or a call on the flop is weak). Only raise the size of the big blind. Go "all in" if you get one of the top ten hands. You MUST NOT let the blinds deplete your bank roll away by folding. This is the time to be aggressive (within reason). With this Texas No Limit Holdem Tournament Strategy you should be able to finish in-the-money at 90% of your online Texas no limit holdem tournaments.
Cheers and Good Luck!
